"The idea is not to block every shot.

The idea is to make your opponent believe that you might block every shot."

                                                                                                                                                                 Bill Russell

The D School's objective is to increase a player’s awareness, to the fundamentals of defensive basketball, from every position on every position. A player becomes knowledgeable of situations, what’s expected, thereby increasing their reaction time. Defense will be recognized as an entity of its own. The D School gets players excited to play defense, and gain insight on their ability to be an impact player.

The D School has offered basketball skills training to youth, middle school, high school boys and girls, and collegiate players for the past ten years. With extensive experience in the game of basketball and several training successes, we thought we would take our training to the next level.

Our basketball training is done with

Consistent, Corrective and Constant Communication.

  • Communication is needed in order to move a player from one level to the next.

  • We build well rounded players, by establishing good habit.

  • Our training methods are immersed in developing sound fundamentals that will allow for more advanced training and development as the player continues to grow.

Testimonies

As the saying goes – “Defense wins games” – so I asked Coach Harper and the D-School to work with my 12U girls basketball team to develop mental and physical defensive techniques to upgrade their defensive court sense.  At the time, the team had a record of  2 wins and 1 loss.  The girls’ confidence level was lifted after one session and after three sessions we were on our way to a County Championship game. Our overall record was 9 wins –one loss. Also, when we played the team that we lost to—our defense resulted in a 20 point victory for us but our opponent did not score 20 points!

Coach,

Thought you might like to know that Austin made the freshman basketball team at ...... You are a big part of the reason he made the team. Austin like's it when he trains with you.

... both coaches, JV and Varsity, said the same thing. they said he stood out and the others seemed nervous. When you read what he wrote it's what we see all of the time. Your madness works my brother!!! Unlike some others there's a method to your madness. I use to study plans and I can see yours coming together. Piece by piece.

Brandon made the 6th grade team at .... This wouldn't have happened if you didn't bring him into your program. Thank you for taking an interest in him. Now he's got a year to get good enough to make the 7th/8th grade team. Brandon played an AAU game tonight with his old team. He looked like a completely different kid on defense. Several parents asked what he's been doing. Your camp is the real deal. I'm telling other parents to send their kids to your D School.

Dear Hoop Ed:  I just want to give a big shout out to Coach Byron Harper who ran "D" School at St. Ann's this summer.  He brought intensity, professionalism, passion and joy to the week, and my son absolutely loved him.  We even got to see Coach in action during a Georgetown Kenner League game, and he was so kind to my son when we saw him, with hugs and smiles.  What a great asset to the program, and thanks for offering D school this summer.

I am writing you a letter of appreciation  for the assistance and confidence you instilled in my son during the five weekend sessions... In my twenty-six years experience of playing the sport of basketball and coaching the game, I have never heard or seen a clinic that focuses on defense... My son learned  the fundamentals and ''value of defense and received the individual attention needed  to comprehend... Byron Harper also  taught the players of how to study game film of which most players don't learn until their Junior Varsity or Varsity years...
